The Australia Temporary Graduate Visa allows foreign students who have finished at least 2 years of study from a recognized Australian educational institution to work temporarily in Australia. This Subclass 485 Visa gives graduates the opportunity to get 10 Australian work experience points, to meet the required general skilled migration points score and qualify for permanent residency. The subclass 485 visa does put restriction the type of work graduates can do or the number of hours they can work.

The visa can be categorized into two:

Post-Study Work streams Visa: only international students who graduate with a bachelor, masters or doctoral degree from a recognized Australian educational institution (regardless of their course of study), are eligible. This visa is valid for a much longer time of 2 to 4 years.

Graduate Work stream Visa: only foreign students who finished with requisite skills and qualifications that are related to the occupations on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) are eligible. This visa is valid for only eighteen months.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for a Subclass 485 Visa, applicants must:

  • Have held an authorized Student visa in the last six months
  • Have evidence of competent English level
  • Apply for this visa within Australia
  • Meet all health and, character requirements
  • You must have applied for the visa within 6 months of receiving the results
  • Complete at least 2 academic years of study within Australia

Requirements for Post-Study Work stream Visa

Before lodging the application of this visa, applicants must

  • Have file an application for and successively been offered their first Student visa to Australia on or later than 5th of November 2011
  • Have satisfied the study requirement of Australia in the past 6 months
  • Have a bachelor, masters or doctoral degree from a recognized Australian educational institution

Prerequisites for Graduate Work stream Visa

At the time of lodging the application of this visa, applicants must

  • Choose an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List
  • Apply for skills assessment in their chosen occupation
  • Meet the study requirement set by the Home Affairs Department in the last six months

Visa processing times & Fee

To apply for a Australia Temporary Graduate Visa, it is necessary to know the associated fee. The application fee for the main applicant is $1535, additional application fee for relatives 18 years and over is $735, while the additional application fee for relatives under 18 years is $370.
