Newfoundland & Labrador Immigration is making an exemplary progress, and the province is inundated with applications in a span of Two years after it released the immigration strategy. It is all set to admit 1,700 immigrants three years before expectations.

The provincial government stated in 2017, regarding welcoming 50 per cent extra immigrants, for each year till 2022. The basis was the 2015 immigration rate which allowed 1,122 Permanent Residents in Canada. Thus the target was 600 additional immigrants for meeting the target.

Bernard Davis, Skills and Labor Minister, Newfoundland and Labrador happily says that 1,700 was, a lofty goal then but the measures in Newfoundland & Labrador Immigration have created an impact and by the end of the present fiscal the goal will be surpassed substantially.

Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program Helps in Better Performance

The increase in the number of applications is the result of a long term immigration strategy of the Province with the participation of the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program of the federal government. It was a tough position to begin but these are the fruits of sound investments. Owing to the surplus applications there will be a backlog in processing the applications.

The government will take all the measures for maintaining its integrity and ensure that people get proper support. The province has five trained Immigration Program Development Officers. It will also accommodate the arrival of immigrants, and revise its five-year strategy for addressing the challenges. The strategy indicates improving immigrant retention will be a top priority. Statistics Canada reported that 51 percent of immigrants in Newfoundland and Labrador continued staying in the province between 2011 and 2016.

The retention rate is a focus and immigrants, will get the necessary support. The Province needs immigration to meet the challenge of a declining population, standing at 525,000 people. In case of absence of immigrants, the work-age population will decrease in the Province by 10 percent by 2025. Also immigration is a major contributing factor to achieve growth.
