The Irish Work Permit allows a non-EU citizen to legally work in Ireland for an employer in a specific occupation. The permit is initially granted to applicants with a job offer for two years validity. Unlike the Critical Skills Employment Permit, this Permit covers all occupations unless specified otherwise. The Irish Work Permit Scheme is for work permits issuance for occupations with an annual salary of EUR 30,000 or more where there is the unavailability of Green Card Permits.
In a few circumstances, the work permit can be issued for an annual salary that ranges below EUR 30,000.
It can also be issued to the applicant based on the occupation specified on the permit. The initial validity period is two years which can be renewed for another three years. It can also be issued indefinitely after five years.
Either an employee or an employer can apply for the permit. The employee has to possess the relevant skills, qualifications, or experience for the desired job. The application requires evidence that it has been impossible to find a Swiss or an EEA national to occupy the position.
For eligibility for an Ireland Work Permit, the job offer must be from a registered employer who is also trading in Ireland. A minimum of 50% of the employees must be EEA nationals, except for start-up companies. There is also a requirement to possess the least number of EEA nationals that are employed with the Irish entity.
For eligibility for Ireland General Employment Permit, the applicant has to possess a job offer. A detailed proposed employment description is needed as well as the required qualifications.
You can apply for the Work Permit Scheme under two types of occupations:
For an annual salary of EUR 30,000 or more (excluding bonuses), the work permit is available for all eligible occupations, except for those that are contrary to the interest of the public.
For an annual salary that ranges less than EUR 30,000, only a few numbers of occupations are considered for a work permit issuance. This is from non-EEA graduates who are eligible and from applicants who possess fluency in a non-EEA language.
In both cases, work permits are not considered for any job categories that have been specified in the list of ineligible job categories
A job vacancy which requires an individual or employer to make an application under the Work Permit Scheme has to be advertised in local and national newspapers and the FAS/EURES employment network for three days to ensure that a national of Switzerland or the EEA, and a national of Romania and Bulgaria, cannot be found to fill up the vacancy.
Work permit up to 6 months costs €500 while that of two years costs €1,000
