The UK Student Dependent Visa is issued to several categories of applicants.

Categories of persons defined as dependents by the UK immigration are:

• The spouse,
• A civil partner,
• Dependent children who are below the age of 18.

It should be noted that a bachelor is not considered as a dependent and is therefore not eligible for the Student Dependent Visa to the United Kingdom. Also, parents and family members are not regarded as dependents by the UK immigration where this UK Visa is concerned. This means that they do not qualify for UK dependent visa, neither are they allowed to accompany a student into the UK as a dependent.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

It is most advisable that when an applicant is taking a student dependent along with him to the UK, he or she should apply for the dependent's visa alongside his or her own application.

• While applying for the visa, it should be well stated that such a dependent is a student coming to study in the United Kingdom.
• In cases where the dependent does not apply at the same time as the original applicant, such a dependent should attach one copy of the applicant’s passport, a copy of the United Kingdom Student Visa and a letter from the school authorities confirming his or her status as an undergraduate of the said university. He or she should then tender the application to the UK Immigration Services.
• The sponsor will have to show that he or she can fend for himself or herself and also for the dependent that will be coming under his care without the help of the public and also without depending on a future income in the UK which is never certain.
• If a student is studying and living in the United Kingdom under the Spouse Dependent Visa, his or her spouse would be allowed to work in the UK.

The students should always double check whether the visa given to him or her gives him or heradependent status because if there is a mistake, the applicant might go through strenuous efforts to correct it at the UK Visa Services after arriving to the United Kingdom.

Visa Fees

The fees differ, depending on the condition which the application goes through.

• If an applicant is applying by post in the UK, and the dependent(s) are aged below 18, if they are applying together, each member would be required to pay €197. However, if they are applying separately, each member would be required to pay €561.
• If an applicant is applying from inside the UK with dependents below the age of 18, if they are applying together, each member pays €358. However, members applying separately would be required to pay €867
• If dependents below the age of 18 apply to the applicant from outside the UK, they pay the sum of €289. The fee is also the same for those whose dependents are not applying together.
