The Australia Skilled Independent Visa is a type of visa that is issued to every skilled worker that does not have the citizenship of Australia and are not under the sponsorship of any indigene employer, state, an organization or family member.

A subclass 189 Visa holder can live and work permanently in Australia, provided that he has met all the requirements in the process of immigration to Australia. Not only can he or she live and work permanently anywhere in Australia, he or she can also include certain dependents in the visa application.

It should be noted that a person applying for this visa has to score at least 60% in the Point Test in order to be qualified.

Program Details

The Application Process:

While applying for the Australia Skilled Independent Visa, the very first step in the application is submitting an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect. This can be done both within and outside Australia.

There are three stages an applicant must go through when applying for this Visa:

Stage 1: This is where the applicant does and finishes a skills assessment test with the relevant governing body of his nominated occupation. This helps the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) judge whether or not you have the skill required for your occupation.

Stage 2: After successfully passing through the first stage, the applicant submits his or her Expression of Interest through SkillSelect. This stage can be done either inside Australia or outside Australia.

Stage 3: After the second stage, the applicant will be issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA). After then, he or she will continue with the DIBP stage of application where he or she submits the final application to be approved by the DIBP.

Eligibility Criteria

Visa Application Eligibility:

An applicant must be invited to apply for this visa.

He must be younger than 45 years when he is invited to apply for this visa.

  • The applicant in question must nominate an occupation that is relevant to his skill and qualification and is n the important Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
  • He or she must have the skills he has claimed to have assessed by the relevant authorities in order to be suitable for his or her career nomination.
  • He must be competent, fluent and be able to communicate in the English language.
  • He must score at least 60% in the Point test.
  • He or she must meet the academic, health and character requirements.

Visa Program Conditions

A successful applicant only has to live for 2 years out of the five years for him or her to have the visa reissued for another five years.

On the other hand, he or she can stay for a consecutive four years in the country and be eligible for citizenship. However, in order to avoid gaining citizenship, an applicant must apply for a Resident Return Visa before the original one elapses.
