New Canadian Immigrants Required to check health coverage entitlement
Canada has a well organized Public Health Care System, but some provinces have a waiting period for new canadian permanent residents. Moreover, the work permit holders and study permit holders also obtain a different treatment.
Health Coverage Policy in Canadian provinces
Three provinces of Canada Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia have up to three months of Public Health Care waiting period. Additionally, there is a waiting period in Yukon, Nunavut and Northwest Territories also. For these provinces, the newcomers require to purchase interim medical insurance for covering an unexpected health care cost. In different provinces, there is a retroactive coverage to the date of arrival after finishing the registration.

Health cover for the work permit and study permit holders depends on the province/territory. Work permits should be valid for a specific period, (6 to12 months), to get the covered, in case they live and work in the same province/territory. Ultimately, the rules vary based on the class of work permit. Hence all applicants must be aware of their coverage.
Specific Canadian Provinces or Territories:
- Do not offer Medicare to global students.
- Grant Medicare only if the student is enrolled for an academic program for greater than 12 months.
- Only give coverage following the student has lived with study permit for 12 consecutive months in the territory or province.
- Let global students on Medicare instantly or after that jurisdiction’s official waiting period, if they hold a study permit valid for 06 months or higher.
Provinces can also modify their policy towards the holders of study permit, as global students studying in the province of Manitoba. Effective from Sept 1, 2018, Manitoba province Health performed new qualification criteria which made global students inappropriate for coverage, despite their duration of permit or study permit.
