Indians who are studying in the UK has roughly doubled in the recent three years, with above 21,000 student visas announced to Indians till March 2019. A white paper on prolonging the duration so that students can live and work post-study is also in the operations to make Britain an engaging destination for students from India, officials announced.

While Canada and Australia are attracting global students in droves with their more accessible work and study measures and by surpassing the UK as a favored student destination. The current British government is delivering serious thought to provide education cooperation with the recognition it deserves.

The Indian students' number in the UK recorded a 40% increase over the previous year. The students from India who appealed for visas, 96% were successful, announced Dominic Asquith, British High Commissioner.

The External Affairs Ministry told in Parliament that as several as 7,52,725 students from India are studying overseas, with the US the favored goal for higher education. Canada and Australia take the next places. The US has 2,11,703 students from India.

Canada began its Program of Post-Graduation Work Permit in 2006 to enable students to obtain work experience which qualifies for Canada PR. Point-based immigration policies of Australia were also intended at supporting global students to pursue Australia PR.

However, following the UK published the cancellation of post-study work rights in the year 2011, the Indian students' number went down distinctly from a height of 38,677 in the year 2011 to 16,655 in the year 2016.

Keen to bring international students, who as per the 2017 study produced higher than 25 billion pounds for the UK economy and supported give a hike to regional jobs and local companies, the British government is preparing to prolong the number of months an international student can stay back and work.

There is a plan to raise the UK post-study Work Visa tenure from the present 4 months to 12 months, told British Council Director North India, Tom Birtwistle.
